Random thoughts while walking

When I worked at MDU, my mornings often began before sun up. It was better that I worked early to catch up on backlogs when my little boys were asleep. Then I could be home with them after work to eat and play.

Now the boys are grown, but their needs have largely been replaced by a Grandpa who likes to eat and be with Steve in the evenings, whether it's reading, playing Scrabble or watching another baseball game on TV.

But instead of going to work early, I now go for my therapeutic walks early. I get up at 5:30 a.m. Now that it's getting colder, it takes me about 10 minutes to get dressed in layers so that I stay warm on my four-mile hike west on second street and east on first street until I reach home.

Grandpa and the rest of my family are sleeping, so I'm not taking away any "quality" time from them by being gone. Right before I leave the house, I take a drink of water and pop two pieces of peppermint gum in mouth so that I won't get thirsty on my walk.

Walking alone leaves me with an hour or so of solitude as I trudge down the streets, dimly lit by street lights that are often shadowed by tall trees. For some of the time, I pray about this or that, but its hard to pray, walk, and chew gum at the same time. So sometimes I think about songs that talk about walking.

My favorite is probably "In the Garden." I like the part where it says, "He walks with me and talks with me...and tell me I am his own." That helps me to feel less alone -- especially when I reach the west end of town farthest from my house and I hear dogs barking and growling from a farm nearby.

Today, however, another song came to mind. It's from the Disney movie, "Snow White." You know the song, when the Dwarfs (now known as little people) are heading of to work and they sing "Hi, Ho...Hi, Ho...it's off to work I go."

Well, in my version, the song goes like this: "I eat, I eat, so off to walk I go...I don't walk fast, I take it slow...hi, ho...hi, ho"

Don't laugh...it beats being chased by dogs.

Hey nice new look! Let me guess is your favorite color green? If that's an example of your song composition skills I wouldn't quit my day job just yet.

Happy walking!

Ar Em - Now you see why I choose to write rather than be a designer. But you are right -- my favorite color is green. Which reminds me of the Oakland A's about 20 years ago and their star left-handed pitcher Vida Blue. It was said that their official colors were wedding gown white, lemon yellow, John Deere green and Vida Blue. Of course, I also like green because its the color of money.

Steve I have always loved to read your columns. I enjoyed them when you wrote for the Fallon Co. News, and I still enjoy them today. I try to check everyday for a new one but they don't seem to show up that often. That's ok though, I keep coming back to find new ones later.I don't generally comment because a very wise man once told me. "It's better to be quiet and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and be known a fool." I will comment a little more often as I get used to it.

Hey Dave, I don't know you and am sure you don't know me. But I love that quote. People often accuse me of being so quiet and that is exactly why I am. I try not to speak unless I have something worthwhile to say. Another quote I enjoy that is along those same lines, "God gave us 2 ears and only one mouth so we should listen twice as much as we talk"

Keep the comments coming or better yet, start your own blog!

Uncle Steve.I just got a great idea for your morning walk, now that the weather has changed.A tread-mill with movies filmed from your favorite places,in more suitable weather. You could take a movie of your walks in the summer, play them back on the TV when storms like this one blow in.It would be a"walk in the park"Barking dogs and no fear of a dog-bite.I would have one 5 or 10 minute clip of vicious dogs snapping and growling. Then back to the tranquility of birds in the Spingtime. It would be fun to revisit your favorite summer spots in the dead of winter. It's not real bad weather here yet but I'm thinking how nice summer was at the Ruby Lake. There were alot of flying bugs but I have a net-like tent to sit in and keep the bugs out.Bugs would be edited out of my walking movie! As a matter of fact,I remember wishing it was winter so all those mosquitoes would be dead. That's why I like winter NO Flying bugs.We have the best of both worlds.Maybe my second movie will be of a snow storm with no bugs to swat.Shoot why make a movie,I may just go outside and take a walk and enjoy no bugs.Pat and I are planning a 2 or so mile elk hunt on the weekend.I hope we don't get an elk until we get back to the truck.Swatting flying insects is easier than packing out an elk and you know now I don't really like swatting flying insects.I used to ride a stationary bike while I watched the stock-market on TV,But that went to heck, too. It really is great life,no really!
