Today, March 3rd, spring arrived about noon and ended about 2:45 p.m. What do I mean by spring? I mean that we actually had snow melting and water running. There were no gushers, but after eating lunch I thought about going out for a walk. After putting my jacket on and stepping out on the porch, it looked like a better bet to do some Wii exercises in my livingroom rather than getting my shoes wet jumping from mud puddle to mud puddle.
The sun was shining and there was a slight breeze during that glorious time. Was it my imagination or was the air filled with dewy moisture, perhaps from the melting snow? Well, no matter, it's over. We're back to winter again with a drop in temperatures and an overcast sky.
I believe the snow has quit melting.
And yet, for a few brief minutes, there was a hint of something different in the air. Call it spring, call it optimism, call it a chance for a different season...it was there, if only briefly.
I'm sure bears that have been hibernating all winter encounter something like what I felt when they wake up from their five-month nap. They go to the end of their cave, stick their nose out and try to smell something different from what they have breathing indoors all winter long.
When I drive home tonight, my driveway will still be lined with banks of snow. The remnants of our bird population will still need me to put some more bird seed in the feeders. And the melted water will probably have turned to a sheet of ice.
But...at least today we got a hint of another season -- a better one than what we've endured since November. Perhaps it won't be much longer until we get another warm spell. Who knows....maybe it will last longer than three hours next time.

Hey Steve- Yesterday was beautiful in the Gallatin Co. I wore a sweatshirt when I had to run to Bozeman for some picture prints. Today it rained then snowed. Currently there is about four inches of the white stuff on the ground. I had planned on going home tommorrow, but am thinking I may be stuck here a while longer. I know that MTs snow is much less than your numerous feet of snow, but just wanted to write something. Stay warm!
Our "spring" seems to be holding. This -- March 5th -- is the third day in a row where we have had some melting of the snow mountains that sit in our yards and driveways. Today's high is projected to be 39 degrees...could we wish for 40? At least it's above freezing. However, the potholes have emerged. Put's me in mind of what the Alaskans call spring. To them the season is called "breakup" because the ice in the river breaks up and so do their streets.
