Odds and ends

I really don't have a clue how many people are reading this blog. However, I want you to know that if you are reading it and enjoying it, I truly thank you for investing a little time.

One of the reasons that I like it is simply because I must express myself. You've heard the old axiom, "I think, therefore I am." Or as the taxi drivers think in New York City, "I honk, therefore I am."

For me it more basic, "I write, therefore I am." This probably won't come as shock to anyone, but one of my best toys as a child was a workable press with movable rubber letters that I bought from Annie Evans at Annie's Gifts in Roundup. (For people who don't know, when Annie got sick -- and later died -- her family locked up the store with all the merchandise, and as far as I know all the stuff is still in the store, collecting dust and turning yellow.)

Anyway, getting back to that little press that I bought when I was about 10, I knew then that I wanted to be a newspaper reporter. Well, I did that. Unfortunately, being a reporter didn't pay as well as being a public relations person, so I zigged and zagged and discovered that my writing skills were appreciated more financially by companies and organizations than by newspaper publishers.

This is a long way of getting to my point. I love to write -- to string thoughts together from mere words. Good writing is as close as I'll probably ever come to God. Just as he "spoke" and created the world, I can take a blank piece of paper and create a story. That to me is the true definition of creation -- making something from nothing.

Maybe that's why I'm a fan of the Seinfeld series, the "show about nothing."

A second reason I like the blog is because my family and friends can continue to share in the "great debates" about politics, Alka Seltzer Plus and investment strategies that we used to discuss at my parents' home in Roundup whenever we got together. Now our forum is this blog. We're probably saving our hearing, too, by reading our expressive opinions rather than having to hear them expressed orally.

So enjoy...and keep the comments coming.

Uncle Steve- While I throughly enjoy reading your blog, I would much rather have the in depth conversations that arise when ar vee and you are together. Who can forget the Alka Seltzer talk and debate. I also recall the great political debates that arose around the kitchen table and the living room. Those conversations were one of the highlights of the holidays- the first being able to see my relatives and just hanging out. Keep up the good work Steve- I'm sure that there are others that share my view!

Thanks Gary...I miss the "great debates" as well. You can't beat your dad for "bust-a-gut" entertainment. For you readers who are only catching a little bit of this, my brother Randy suffered from dizziness for years until he discovered Alka Seltzer Plus, the cold medicine that fizzes in water. Unfortunately, the FDA decided that there was some ingredient that wasn't very healthy so they took the original AS+ off the shelves and replaced it with a phony AS+ that didn't have the same ingredient or effect. But never fear, Randy bought a multi-lifetime supply of original AS+ off e-Bay. I've condensed several years worth of heartache, heartbreak and salvation into a couple of sentences -- and my version isn't nearly as funny as the author's. For you Seinfeld nuts who remember the episode when Elaine went around to all drugstores buying up the contraceptive sponges that were taken off the market, Randy's blow-by-blow stories of Alka Seltzer Plus woes and wins clearly outshine the Hollywood version of Elaine. So Ar Vee, when you get a dizzy spell, do you have to decide whether its' "effervescent-worthy?"

Yes I read your blog and enjoy it. My investment in a little time has always paid off. The biggest is probably that you inspired me to create my own blog http://morewordstoponder.blogspot.com. Although I'm much happier reading than writing I also enjoy putting thoughts down on "paper" or these days a "computer screen".

This medium will never replace "face to face" meetings but it's much better than no communication at all and provides a very cost effective way for family and friends to talk without travel expenses.

Steve, you keep writing and I'll keep reading!

Hi Uncle Steve, every since I've had a job that my head wasn't lower than my,you know posterior caudal,I haven't had as many bouts with dizziness.I don't know if it's where I live or what, but I'm not near as threatened now as before.I would like to get the old medical records of when I was in Roundup.I could count on being dizzy, early Fall, football season, late December, basketball season and early spring, track season.A person looks for some factor to connect things and I thought maybe pinetree pollen could trigger it,living so close to the hills.I could fuction at about 1/8th of normal so no wonder I loved a cure.Bouts would last somtimes months without the Alka Seltzer Plus.I took a blood pressure pill a while back,in the summer, that made me dizzy.Although at the time I didn't know what caused it,drinking beer would clear it up.It's hard to golf when your dizzy so I would drink 3 or more beers on a golf outing and put a reveres spin on the dizziness making me normal.I would like to know what affect the beer had on the Toprol or on vertigo over all.Anyway,The doctor took me off Toprol and right a way I got better. That made me think it could be enzimes in the stomache causing me to be dizzy,or maybe something to do with my blood pressure,or could it just be inner ear.Who the blank knows?I still have my stash of Alka Plus, but Miller Light has been a viable substitute.Effervescent and easier to find. The only trouble with beer is,religious folks relate it to sin and others to plain old "No good".I rather think it to be medicinal. After all,I don't get dizzy much now.The key is moderation. With that,DVD,Big G,stay well!

Now I know how Seinfeld feels. When Jerry and Larry David created that series, they thought Jerry would be the star. However, it wasn't long before people discovered the antics of Kramer and Jerry became old hat. That's the way this blog. Honestly, how many people really care what I say. We're all rooting for Ar Vee to write his comments. That's what's driving the readership to this blog. If I can think of something intelligent to write about the election next week, I'll try to do it, so I can get Ar Vee to give us his perspective one more time. And while I'm add it, who forget the time when I was facing shoulder surgery to fix a rotator cuff only to find the Ar Vee had already discovered the cure for his sore shoulder -- Tequila.

I think it takes guts to craft something you feel strongly about and put it out there for comment. Keep up the writing, I enjoy the reading.

Although I don't normally make comments, I am a big fan of steve@random. I agree with lisa grace in that it takes guts (confidence, courage) to express one's opinions over the Internet, something I don't do well at. However, I do have to agree with my other brother...., Mcain won't make it to the Whitehouse.

Although I don't walk every day like I should, Steve, I've been trying to walk a little bit more. My dogs love it, Rich and I take them up the hill a few blocks from home and let them roam for awhile. I try to jog a little bit while I'm there and the only thought that comes to my mind is from the book The Little Engine That Could..I think I can, I think I can........
