Brother Randy -- ArVee -- will be leaving the civilized world where computers and Internet abound and heading back to Virginia City for the summer. And once again, blogging won't be any fun.
DVD is home from college but I think he's already taken the season off from blogging. Other bloggers -- cousin Gary and ArEm -- seem to have begun their summer vacations as well.
So I'm wondering if I too shouldn't take the summer off. Oh, I'll still have my fits...but maybe I'll just try to keep them all bottled up inside me so I can have a heart attack or a stroke. There's no need to let them out if no one is blogging or commenting.
It's like the story about the tree in the forest. If there's no one to hear the tree fall to the ground, did it make a noise?
If there's no one to tell me that Democrats are good people just trying to make a difference by turning on the printing press and running up the national deficit...are they really the scourge of the earth that I make them out to be?
If no one tells me that Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow are really right...than should I believe they are the leftists that I think they are?
Well, for the next three months or four months I may just concentrate on my work, my family life, my pedicure and manicure and leave the blogging to Greyhound. (Whoops, I meant driving.)
That sound you heard was the "blogging bear" heading into his cave for a three month hibernation. GRRRRRR!

Uncle Steve your right! Like the 49er's picked up and left the Golden state for a new Gold Rush in Montana,I too shall head for the simple life.Slightly frozen in the time of the late 1800s and Victorian Era,Virginia City is really more my style. It's a simple life of camping, cattle drives and an occasional"Dance Hall Girl"walking the boardwalk.Ice-cream and the "Candy Store" concern people more than politics.Virginia City is modern enough to have a stagecoach and steam powered train non-the-less.If it weren't for the occasioal stressed out, disoriented tourist with there respective "hair on fire" this Virginia City would be without flaw.Work is mostly visiting, everyone from everywhere.I am a tourist, once in a while, and know what I like.I like to be greeted by a freindly person.I took down the "no pop" or "no candy" and "no icecream" signs long ago.Ever notice how I can discuss anything on the blog? That's what I do everyday in Virginia City.Image all the people who come in my store want to talk about something.I hear hundreds of topics every summer and when a person leaves the store,I think "What a nice person".Yep,for the summer I live the "good old days".I never see a paper or news on TV and for that matter don't miss it.Not much changes. Most of the summer I'm alone,so birds and foxes become my company. The panoramic view of Montana becomes my front-room.I will miss the Blogs so if you and our blog friends take a break I won't feel I missed out.I have been told I could take a lap-top.I do think that would be a let down to those looking for that 'place in time',The Old Days, the times that make antiques worth so much, just to own a piece of that time. The very thing that makes Virginia City,"The Good Old Days".If people call us "old fashion" we've done are part.I'll check out of school Friday and summer will go by too fast.Enjoy the heat now that our bug free winter is over.So until Orion appears again fair-well.
Well, I might doze off on occasion but I will most certainly not be hibernating. I'll still be blogging this Summer, albeit not very frequently. ArVee, I'll be expecting to hear from you when School starts up again. And you'd better take notes because I'll expect a trailer-full of stories when you get back!
Ar Vee - there is a town northwest of Missoula called "Paradise." I think you've confused it with Virginia City. For those that don't know, there was a sheriff in Virginia City named Henry Plumber who hanged because he was also head of the "roads men" who robbed the stage coaches. His skull is on display. Certainly for him, Virginia City was no paradise. Enjoy the summer. Parents somewhere are raising another batch of naughty kids to send to your school next fall.
Surely you mistake Virginia City for Bannack. The kind folks at Virginia City, the "Vigilantes"gave suspects 7 hours to leave before they were hung and put 77 inches under the surface of the ground in a 3 foot wide grave. Thus the 3-7-77 symbol was not good if placed on your door..How-be-it not many horses had headlights to flee in the wee hours of the morning. On second thought,it did became quite popular to hang folks. And legend has it the offese for hanging sometimes boiled down to who a person knew, thus weeding out those who may flirt with an already betrothed.Like the handsome,Jack Slade, the good for nothin "flirter".I guess he shot alot of men and robbed a few stages, too. But that flirting didn't help.I think his ghost still haunts the local watering holes.Modern day ladies who live in Virginia City would rather paint the picture of Victoria Dances, big dresses and big hair.Escorted by men in a gentlemans Civil War clothing.A kinder, gentler way of hiding the blood soaked streets.Yep,what a place.
I found this and other interesting articles when googling Jack Slade,Virginia City, Montana.Very Colorful!---Virginia Dale was founded by Jack Slade back in 1862 and, as legend has it, named after his devoted partner and wife. It was a stop on the Overland Stage line and Jack was their agent here on the frontier. But, mostly, he was an agent for Jack Slade. By some accounts he made a much better living robbing the stages than servicing them. Virginia Dale became a haven for settlers seeking refuge from Indian attacks and for outlaws from all around. Then, one day, when Jack was quite drunk, he was shot by a man named named Jules Beni. Jules emptied a Colt revolver into old Jack and then, for good measure, shot him twice with a shotgun. But, miraculously, Jack survived the attack and he returned to the waystation named for Jules Beni and killed him dead as dirt. And he cut off Jules' ears and nailed one to a post in the corral. The other he wore on his keychain right up to the day he was hanged out in Virginia City, Montana by the local vigilance committee. And, so the story goes, Virginia gathered up Jack's body and took it back to the ranch. And she pickled it in alcohol and kept it under her bed.
Yes, things were pretty wild back in the Wild West.
Ah, all this talk of hangin' makes me want to move back to Missoula! My childhood compound -- I mean, home -- is no longer there, I guess I'd have to see if the old Kaczynski place is available (assuming someone trailered it back).
Steve and Bismarckman. you both share the experience of Missoula,Mt.That area is very nice! But as I reread your original post Steve it made me question something about that tree falling.Missoula is near the forest and when a tree falls you both know it's kind of loud. It's a fact it produced sound waves falling so how can it be said there was no noise?Just wondered
It's a philosophical discussion. For instance, some people think if they steal and don't get caught, then its okay. Or if they murder someone who's never missed. I think you get it now. Sort of like, if they pass cap and trade but still get voted back into office by idealogues, did they really wreck the economy?
Man, these are some great comments guys! Linz and I have only made it to Virginia CIty the one time, but we loved it a lot, and I'm pretty sure that the museum was a big part of that, nothing gets to me like skulls club feet and old farming tools for some reason.
We too miss Missoula. Linz went to school there for 5 years and lived there for about 1 1/2, and had a great time in the city. Of course, I think our timethere was more recent than you-alls, but still a fun city. We think daily of the restaurants we miss there. Double Front, Triple Dragon, The Depot....
Oh, and for the record, I'm not very good at commenting, but I do real all of your blogs pretty regularly, for what it's worth.
I will miss your blogs. I also know how short our spring/summer is on the prairies. You need to take advantage of the beautiful weather while you can!
Now that would be an interesting museum or nice conversation piece,on or off the truck. The old Kaczynski residence.
Steve- Although I have not posted in quite a while- I am still around. I had the opportunity to drive to the beautiful City of Virginia today and see Ar Vee. The town was just the same as I left it many years ago- old fashioned and set in the most beautiful place in Montana. Someday I will get back to the blogging- as soon as I find the time!
